I’ve been writing these blog posts at night, in bed, before I fall asleep. Call it an end of the day journal/blog kinda thing. Call it something to keep me up late. Call it a good habit.
Whatever you call it, it’s good for me. I have to write every single day, which, to be honest, I don’t do. I’m more of a spurt-type of person. Need to pump out 50K words? No problem, but I’m not getting anything else done that month.
But this daily blogging thing has helped me make sure I put virtual pen to virtual ink (is nothing real anymore) every day.
Then I have a day like today. Last night I got an hour less sleep than I normally get. I was up a little later trying to get a story finished before sending it off to my critique group. I then had to stay up to do my daily blog post. All after having a full day at work, recording three episodes for my YouTube channel, and even sneaking in some reading.
Today was different. I’ve been paying for yesterday’s push all day long. Normally it wouldn’t be a big deal, but I have a production schedule that I’m already worried I won’t meet for this year, so the stress is on to plug away at things on a daily basis.
Regardless, I tried. After work, I sat down to read for half an hour to clear my head. I also read through feedback on my latest drafted story (the one I finished last night). Two of my favorite people in the world were kind enough to read through it and provide feedback in less than 12 hours. I seriously have the best family in the world. Thanks, Mike and Matt!
So I started in on some revisions. An hour later, I think I’d gotten 400 words re-done. Not good. I’m normally a 2000-word-per-hour guy.
Okay, the revising isn’t working. This is why I have a YouTube Channel right? Games are stimulating, I have to sit up in an office chair so the microphone can pick me up.
I made it through one episode, which was a little frustrating because it’s a heavily modded version of Factorio (that’s right you one person who reads my blog AND watches my channel, Bob’s Mod is coming), and I was having a hard time figuring out how to create sulfuric acid. I know, first world gamer problems, right?
The net effect is that I tried to record another episode, and I was nodding off. While playing a game!
So why did I write this? Mostly because I made a commitment to write on my blog every day this year, and I’m going to do everything I can to meet that. Also, I like the idea of writing every single day for a full year. I’ve never done that before, so I don’t want to break the chain.
But, I think it’s time to call it for the day. I’m done.
